How does the Water Level Sensor Work?


MicroSensor's water level sensor is a tool that detects an excessively high or low liquid level in a stationary container. The two types of liquid level measurement devices are contact type and non-contact type. Similar to water pressure sensors, water level transmitters detect the water pressure first when it is placed at a certain depth in the liquid. Then it converts the pressure into the liquid level height. Then the submersible water level transmitter or water level transducer converts the liquid level's height into an output electrical signal. Hence, level sensors are commonly used to monitor reservoirs, water tanks, seawater, underground water, rivers, etc. Additionally, like oil level sensors, they can be used in oil tanks as well.



Main Applications of Water Level Sensors 


Water level sensors are mainly utilized in various water-related industries as below:

• City Water Supply and Drainage Systems:

Water level sensors monitor the level in tanks, reservoirs, and water distribution networks in city water supply systems. It ensures the efficient management and distribution of potable water.

Urban drainage systems also benefit from the use of submersible level sensors. These sensors are applied in major areas and stormwater storage tanks to monitor underground environments and prevent potential accidents or drain blockages. 

• Wastewater Treatment Plants:

Water level sensors continuously measure liquid levels of containers, and ponds in the treatment processes. Level measurement of water and wastewater provides crucial data for process control and ensures optimal performance.

• Underground Water:

Water level sensors allow continuous surveillance of groundwater levels to manage resources effectively. They also provide early warning of potential risks such as flooding or drought. Installation Notes of Submersible Level Sensors


The following facts should be noted when installing the submersible level sensors:

• Suitable Installation Site: The installation should be carried out in a place that is easy to operate and maintain. Keep away from vibration sources and heat sources to avoid equipment damage.

• Prevent Blockage by Impurities: Before installation, the installation area should be cleaned to ensure that there are no debris and dirt, as these substances may affect the accuracy and stability of the level transmitters.

• Installation Direction: The submersible level sensors should be vertically downward to ensure the accuracy of the measurement results.

• Keep Away from Liquid Inlets and Outlets: The installation location should be as far away from the liquid inlets and outlets as possible to avoid errors caused by liquid flow.

• Protect the Cable: During installation, ensure that the cable is not bent or blocked and cannot be damaged. Excess cables can be coiled up.

• Lightning Protection: If installed outdoors, lightning protection are also required to ensure the safe use of the instruments.

• Waterproof Treatment: For level transmitters with junction boxes, rain or water protection should be taken and the junction box should be reliably grounded.
